7-a-Side Football Basics: Rules, Format, and What to Expect

2 min read

Never played 7-a-side before? No worries. It is the most popular format in Kenya for a reason: it is fast, inclusive, and you do not need 22 people to get a game going. Here is everything you need to know before your first session at PAKTB Grace Sports Centre.

How It Works

Two teams of seven (including goalkeepers) play on a pitch roughly 60m x 40m. Matches typically run for one hour, split however your group prefers. Most go with two 25-minute halves and a 5-minute break. Substitutions are rolling, meaning players swap in and out without stopping the game.

The Key Differences from 11-a-Side

  • No offside rule. Attack freely. Position yourself anywhere on the pitch.
  • No slide tackles. Artificial turf and sliding do not mix. Stay on your feet.
  • Rolling substitutions. Players swap on and off without stopping play.
  • Smaller goals, bigger impact. Every shot counts. Goalkeepers are closer to the action.

What You Will Love About It

In 11-a-side, a midfielder might touch the ball 40 times in 90 minutes. In 7-a-side, you will touch it that many times in 20 minutes. The pitch is smaller, the play is faster, and there is nowhere to hide. You will improve your close control, decision-making, and fitness without even trying.

It is also the best way to meet new football people in Nairobi. Show up for one session, and you will leave with new contacts in your phone and a standing invite for next week.

Ready to try it? Book a pitch and bring a friend. Or come solo and join a pickup game.
