The hardest part of 7-a-side is not creating chances. It is finishing them. This drill focuses on the two types of goals you see most often: the cutback from the byline and the second-post run.
Setup
Full goal with a goalkeeper. Cones marking a starting position on the wing (about 5 metres from the byline) and a shooting zone in the centre. Three lines: wide left, wide right, central.
The Cutback
The wide player drives to the byline and cuts the ball back to the central runner. The central player must time their run so they arrive as the ball arrives. If you arrive too early, you are standing still and the keeper reads it. The cutback should be firm and flat, not floated. Aim across the goalkeeper.
The Second-Post Run
Same setup, but the wide player crosses to the far post. The runner on the opposite side times their arrival to meet the ball. Start your run late and arrive fast. Alternate sides every three attempts.
Make It Competitive
Track goals scored. First player to five wins. Or split into teams and count combined totals. Competition sharpens focus and raises intensity to match level.
