45-Minute Session Plan: Pressing and Defensive Shape

1 min read

Most 7-a-side goals come from turnovers, not from patient build-up play. If your team can press intelligently and recover shape quickly, you will win more games than the team with better individual skill. This session builds both habits.

Warm-Up: Rondo 4v2 (8 Minutes)

Four players keep the ball, two press to win it. If a defender wins the ball, the player who lost it swaps in. Keep the area small (8m x 8m). This forces quick decisions under pressure and teaches the two defenders to work as a unit.

Pressing Triggers: 5v5 Directional (15 Minutes)

30m x 20m pitch with two end zones. Teams score by dribbling into the end zone. The defending team must press within 3 seconds of losing the ball. This teaches players to spot pressing triggers: a heavy touch, a player receiving with their back to goal, a pass that forces a stretch. When you see the trigger, you go as a unit.

Defensive Shape: 6v6 Half-Pitch (15 Minutes)

Normal game on half a pitch with goals. Focus on the defending team maintaining a compact shape. After every goal, freeze the game and ask: where is the gap? Who was ball-watching? Visual feedback is powerful.

Cool Down and Debrief (7 Minutes)

Light jogging and stretching. Ask three questions: What pressing trigger did you spot most? When did the press break down? What would you change? The learning sticks when players verbalise it.
