The best 7-a-side teams do not just attack well or defend well. They transition between the two faster than the opposition can react. This drill trains exactly that: the moment you win the ball, you attack immediately. The moment you lose it, you recover immediately.
Setup
Half-pitch. Two small goals at each end. Two teams of four. No goalkeepers. One ball.
How It Works
Normal 4v4 play with one rule: when you win the ball, you must attempt a shot within 8 seconds. Count out loud. This forces the team in possession to attack quickly and directly. No passing sideways. No holding the ball waiting for something to happen.
The defending team knows the attack is coming fast, so they have to recover their shape instantly after losing the ball. No standing around. Sprint back, get goalside, close the space.
Why It Works
In 7-a-side, goals come from transitions more than from patient build-up. The team that reacts fastest to a turnover wins. This drill builds that instinct. After 15 minutes of this, your players will start doing it automatically in matches.
Coaching Points
- First touch after winning the ball should be forward.
- The nearest teammate should offer a passing option immediately.
- Defending team must get compact within 3 seconds of losing possession.
- Praise speed of reaction, not just the end result.
Run this as part of your warm-up before a match and watch how much sharper your team looks in the first 10 minutes.
