Passing Drill: Triangle Support Rotation

1 min read

This drill sharpens one-touch passing, movement off the ball, and the kind of quick combinations that unlock defences in 7-a-side. It works for any level, from youth academy players to adults warming up before a match.

Setup

Three cones in a triangle, about 8 metres apart. Three players, one ball. Each player starts at a cone. Extra players wait behind a cone and rotate in.

The Pattern

  • Player A passes to Player B and immediately runs to Player B position.
  • Player B receives, passes to Player C, and runs to Player C position.
  • Player C receives, passes to Player A old cone (where the next player has stepped in), and the cycle continues.

The rule is simple: pass and move. Never stand still after releasing the ball. This is the fundamental principle of 7-a-side football, where space is tight and static players are easy to mark.

Progressions

  • Two-touch. Control with the first touch, pass with the second. Focus on a clean first touch that sets up the pass.
  • One-touch. No control. The ball must leave your foot immediately. This demands better body shape and earlier scanning.
  • Add a defender. Put one player in the middle who tries to intercept. Now the passing must be sharper and the movement more decisive.

Run this for 10-15 minutes and you will notice the difference in your game. Passes become crisper, movement becomes automatic, and your team starts playing like a team instead of individuals.
